How to Handle “Stick the Dealer” in Euchre

If you’ve ever played Euchre and groaned as the cards gave you nothing but 9s and 10s, you know what it means to face the dreaded “Stick the Dealer” rule. In this popular variation, if everyone passes twice during the trump-making rounds, the dealer is forced to name a trump suit – even if they’d rather throw in the hand.

This rule speeds up the game and adds exciting tension. But how should you play when you’re the one stuck – or when you’re up against someone who is?

In this article, we’ll break down how to handle Stick the Dealer from three perspectives: the dealer, the dealer’s partner, and the defenders.

1. What Is Stick the Dealer?

Normally in Euchre, if no one calls trump after two rounds of bidding, the hand is “thrown in” and the deal moves clockwise. But with Stick the Dealer:

The dealer must name a trump suit in the second round of bidding, even if they have a weak hand.

This Euchre rule ensures the game progresses, but it can also lead to more aggressive play, increased risk of being set, and unique decision-making moments.

2. Situation 1: When You’re the Dealer and You’re Stuck

Being forced to call trump with a weak hand is tough – but you’re not without options. Here’s how to minimize damage or turn the situation to your advantage:

Choose the Best of the Worst
Pick a suit where you have at least one or two cards, even if they’re weak.
Avoid suits where you’re completely void – you don’t want to get trumped by your left-hand opponent right away.

Consider Your Position
Your partner (seated across from you) also passed – so don’t assume they’ll be helpful.
The opponents likely have a stronger distribution, so play conservatively unless you see an opening.

Rare Option: Go Alone (with a twist)
If you’re holding a strong Left Bower + Ace + trump combo, going alone could reduce risk (less chance your partner messes up) and net you 1 point. But this is rare in stick-the-dealer situations.

3. Situation 2: If You’re the Dealer’s Partner

Your job is to read the context. If your partner was stuck into calling trump, assume they don’t have a great hand.

Don’t Overcommit
Lead off-suit and see what happens.
Avoid trump unless you’re trying to burn it out early.

Support Carefully
Try to draw out trump from the opponents.
If your partner wins a trick, feed them back the suit they played – it might be their only strength.

4. Situation 3: If You’re on the Defending Team

This is your moment to shine. Stick the Dealer often puts the calling team in a weak position – especially if the dealer made a desperate trump call.

Lead Aggressively – Start with your strongest non-trump Ace to force them to burn good cards or lose control.

Burn Trump – If you suspect the dealer called trump with only one or two in-hand, lead long suits to force them to trump early.

Track Trump and Cards Played – Every bit of information helps. If you can take just three tricks, you’ll set the dealer and score points.

5. Final Tips

  • Stick the Dealer raises the stakes: every decision matters more.
  • As a dealer, focus on damage control.
  • As a defender, attack early and intelligently.
  • As a partner, be observant and adaptive.
Whether you’re stuck or capitalizing on someone who is, the Stick the Dealer rule makes Euchre more dynamic – and a lot more fun.
