Bid Euchre a variant of the popular Euchre game, but with the added complexity of a bidding system that brings more strategic depth and excitement to the gameplay.

Players bid on the number of tricks they expect to take, with the highest bidder becoming the “maker” and selecting the trump suit. The maker and their partner work together to win the number of tricks they bid, while the other team tries to prevent them from doing so. The game is won by the first team to reach the target score.

Here are the complete rules of the game.

1. Cards and Players

Bid Euchre is played with a standard deck of 24 cards. The game is typically played with four players, who participate in teams of two, although variations exist for two or three players as well.

Similar to the classic Euchre rules, the highest trump card in Bid Euchre is the Jack of the trump suit (known as the “Right Bower”), followed by the Jack of the same color (the “Left Bower”), then the Ace, King, Queen, 10, and 9. The non-trump suits rank A-K-Q-J-10-9, except for the suit of the same color as the trump suit, which has no Jack. In a “no trumps” bid, all suits rank A-K-Q-J-10-9.

2. Bidding

Bidding is an important part of the gameplay, adding more strategy and excitement to the game. Bidding begins with the player to the left of the dealer and continues clockwise. Players must determine how many tricks they believe they can take based on their hand and the potential trump suit. The minimum bid is three, and bids must be made in increments of one. The highest bidder becomes the declarer, and chooses the trump suit for the round.

There are also special bids that can be used in some variations of the game, such as the “Loner” bid, which allows the declarer to play alone without their partner’s help, or the “Pepper” bid, which allows the declarer to exchange cards with their partner before the first trick is played.

It’s important to note that the bidding process can vary depending on the specific variation of Bid Euchre being played, so it’s a good idea to establish the rules before beginning play.

3. How to Play

The game begins with the dealer shuffling the deck and dealing six cards to each player. The declarer chooses the trump suit for the round, and play begins. Players must follow suit if possible and try to take as many tricks as possible. Each trick taken earns one point for the team. If the declarer’s team takes the number of tricks they bid, they earn an additional point for each trick taken.

4. Scoring

In Bid Euchre, the scoring rules are a little bit different from the usual Euchre scoring system. If the bidding team makes their bid, they score one point for each trick taken, as does the other team. If they fail to make their bid, they lose points equal to their bid, while the other team still scores one point per trick.

The game is played to a target score, and a team must reach the target by fulfilling a successful bid or defeating their opponents’ bid.

Winning by odd tricks is not allowed, and the game continues until a team meets the winning condition. Negative scores are possible.

5. Double card deck

Another variation, Double Deck Bid Euchre, uses a 48-card deck, giving 12 cards to each player. There are two teams of two players each. The minimum bid is three, and the winning bid is the highest bid. If the team makes the bid, they get one point for each trick. If the team with the highest bid fails to make their bid, they lose points equal to their bid. Their opponents still get one point for each trick they take. The game is won by the first team to score 36 points.

Bid Euchre presents a thrilling experience to players who are challenged to make strategic bids and carefully play their cards to outsmart their opponents. Although it shares similarities with other trick-taking games, its distinctive bidding system and rules set it apart.
